Month-End Close Shouldn’t Feel Like Damage Control

Operational Reality: Control

Month-end close shouldn’t feel like damage control.

But in a lot of operations, it does.

Adjustments.

Reclasses.

“Fixing” numbers just to get through the close.

I’ve sat with teams where everyone knows the numbers don’t tie…

but they push through anyway because the clock is running.

That’s not a reporting problem.

It’s a trust problem.

And it usually starts upstream:

– Inventory doesn’t reconcile

– BOMs aren’t reliable

– Planning is working off assumptions

– Workarounds have replaced process

By the time Finance sees it, the damage is already done.

The companies that turn this around don’t start with the system.

They start with control:

1. Find where trust broke

Not symptoms—the exact point the numbers stop matching reality

2. Fix one critical area completely

Not everything at once. One area done right changes behavior

3. Stop allowing workarounds

If the system isn’t trusted, people will build their own

Month-end close should confirm performance.

Not question it.

This is what I’ve learned the hard way.
