The Operator Lens: What Leadership Misses About System Decisions
Operator Lens for Leadership
One of the biggest system mistakes I see in manufacturing has nothing to do with the system itself.
It starts much earlier.
The company starts growing.
Orders increase.
Lead times get longer.
Inventory starts piling up.
Eventually leadership says:
“Maybe we need a new system.”
But the real problem usually isn’t the system.
It’s that nobody ever stopped to answer a few basic questions about how the business actually runs.
Things like:
What really drives our margins?
Where do things break down in the shop or the office?
What information do leaders actually need every week to run the business?
If those answers aren’t clear, a new system will usually make things worse.
Systems don’t fix messy operations.
They expose them.
Bad BOMs.
Spreadsheet workarounds.
Three different ways of doing the same job.
Systems just shine a light on it.
The companies that succeed understand something important:
The system isn’t an IT project.
It’s the operating system for how the business runs.
And the most important decisions about that system usually don’t belong to IT.
They belong to leadership.
This is what I’ve learned the hard way.
