Why Month-End Close Feels Like a Hostage Situation
Month-end close shouldn’t feel like a hostage situation.
But in most manufacturing companies, that’s exactly what it is.
Finance is waiting on ops. Ops is waiting on the warehouse. The warehouse is pulling numbers from a spreadsheet that nobody’s touched since March. And somehow, you’re supposed to sign off on financials that are supposed to reflect reality.
I’ve been on that floor. I’ve been in those rooms. I know what it looks like when the system of record and the actual record have a completely different story to tell.
Here’s the thing nobody says out loud — it’s not a people problem. Your team isn’t incompetent. They’re working around a system that was never set up to match how your business actually runs.
So they do what humans do. They improvise. Duct tape and prayer. Spreadsheets on top of spreadsheets. And every month-end, you fly a little more blind than you did the month before.
If you’re a CFO or COO in manufacturing and you’re nodding right now — that feeling in your gut isn’t paranoia. It’s pattern recognition.
Your numbers are probably right. Eventually. But eventually isn’t a close process. It’s a recovery process.
There’s a difference. And it matters.
