Before You Add AI, Fix Your Process Foundation

Before you add AI, fix the process.

A plant manager showed me their new AI forecasting dashboard. Beautiful charts. Confident numbers.

Then I asked where the inventory data came from.

Three different spreadsheets, two people who usually update them, and a BOM nobody had touched since 2019.

The AI wasn’t wrong. It was just very confident about garbage.

AI can summarize. AI can predict. AI can automate. AI can recommend.

But AI cannot fix a broken operating model.

If your BOMs are inaccurate, AI will scale bad data.

If your inventory transactions are inconsistent, AI will produce confident nonsense.

If every department has its own spreadsheet, AI will not magically create one version of the truth.

If nobody owns the process, AI will just make the confusion faster.

Manufacturers do not need to avoid AI.

They need to stop treating it like a shortcut around process discipline.

Fix the workflow. Clean up the master data. Define ownership. Standardize the rules.

Then AI becomes useful.

Until then, it’s just automation layered on top of chaos.
